At Rusty Stitches, we love all kinds of riding styles, whether it is scraping knee pucks on the track, launching a dirt bike into orbit, or just enjoying a relaxed daily commute. This time, we are sitting down with a rider who completely traded the smooth asphalt for the dirt. We caught up with Maaike (@maaike.r6) to find out what triggered this transition. She tells us exactly why she decided to step completely out of her comfort zone.

Catching up at DARE
We ran into Maaike during the Dutch Adventure Ride Experience (DARE) at Experience Island. She was there by invitation from Adventure Bike Experience Center, Jopa and Leatt, and was really looking forward to riding the track that day. Since it was her first real time hitting the really deep sand, she was understandably a bit nervous.

However, with experienced friends riding alongside her, she felt confident and ready to tackle the challenge. Surrounded by adventure bikes and roaring engines, she was eager to talk about her new adventure and how she is finding her way in this vibrant riding community.

Who is Maaike?
In her daily life, Maaike works in psychiatry, previously handling closed admissions on a High Care unit, and is now starting a new chapter as a personal counselor. But outside of her demanding job, her life revolves around motorcycles.

For a long time, her motorcycle life was all about speed and track days. She started out riding a Honda CBR600, before moving on to her beloved Yamaha R6. She spent years on the racetrack pushing her limits on the asphalt. Maaike is also known for her bold and colorful style. Her Yamaha R6 was initially bright pink, but she later transformed it into a stunning purple and gold combination!

The new adventure machine
Despite all her track experience, Maaike had one major fear on the street: gravel. To conquer that fear and learn a completely new skill, she bought a nearly brand new Honda CRF300L, which she affectionately named ‘Frankey’, just a few months ago.

Knowing that crashing is simply a part of the offroad learning process, she immediately installed heavy duty crash bars. For Maaike, the aesthetics have to be just right, even when getting covered in mud. She started by getting a custom set of decals made to completely transform the styling of Frankey, pimping her ride in a striking red and purple color scheme. To complete her personal look, she then partnered with Leatt to get a perfectly matching gear set in the exact same colors, ensuring she is both fully protected and stylish out there.

The speed on the street was getting too dangerous

Chasing Thrills, Not Speed
While Maaike loved pushing her limits on the track, she noticed that it actually made her ride much faster on public roads as well. Realizing that constantly chasing the thrills of speed on the street was getting too dangerous, she decided it was time for a change. Offroad riding gives her a completely new way to challenge her personal boundaries without hitting extreme speeds.

To get a better feel for the loose surface, she started practicing flat track riding in Lelystad. Sliding around on the dirt oval is helping her build the confidence she needs. She is fully embracing the learning curve and is not afraid to drop the bike.

To take her skills to the next level, Maaike also recently traveled to Romania for an intense enduro training trip with @nomudadventures. Riding with a group of other adventurous girls, she pushed her limits on the rugged trails and conquered obstacles she never thought possible.

It was a challenging experience, and she even joked about becoming a pro at picking up her bike, especially after ending up, Super Mario-style, in a ditch. But with the help of the guides, she conquered the breathtaking mountain views and returned home with a massive confidence boost.

A Growing Community
What she loves most about this new chapter is the rapidly growing community of female offroad riders. She recently joined a ride with twenty other girls, sharing tips, laughs, and pushing each other to become better. With this newfound passion, Maaike is already looking ahead to the future. After her unforgettable training experience in Romania, she is determined to keep pushing her limits and tackling even more rugged trails with her friends.

Real, Unfiltered, and Inspiring
What I find truly beautiful about Maaike’s journey is her courage to share every single step of this new adventure. With a large following on Instagram, she doesn’t just showcase a polished highlight reel; she openly shares the struggles, the crashes, and the moments when things go wrong. Her goal is to inspire other women and show them the unfiltered reality of starting from scratch. She knew absolutely nothing about offroad riding at first and had a massive learning curve ahead of her, but she proves that with relentless determination and raw enthusiasm, you can master things you never thought possible.
